Towards simpler payments: Tito will support Stripe and PayPal only from 30 June

Tito has evolved a lot as a product since our co-founder Paul wrote the first line of code on a Ryanair flight back in April 2011. (Woah, it’s been 10 years!?)

During that time we’ve built a ton of features. Some of these have been at the request of individual customers, especially in the early days.

It’s extremely satisfying to be able to take someone’s requirements on board and deliver a solution that meets their needs. Of course, the flip side is that different people often want different things, and this means you can end up with a sprawling product and a bunch of features not many people are using, but which still need maintaining.

A perfect example of this is our early decision to add support for alternative payment gateways to Stripe and PayPal. These options are now both global standards, but they weren’t yet available in certain locales when Tito first launched. To cover such use cases, we built connectors for several alternative payment gateways including Playflow Pro, Braintree, Realex and Pin (and some others which are no longer used by any of our customers).

As of today, we are deprecating support for these payment gateways and from 30 June 2021, we will be removing support completely. To continue to use Tito for paid events, you will need to switch to Stripe and/or PayPal.

Why are we doing this?

We’ve always believed Tito’s unique value is that it offers a super-fast and delightful checkout experience. The ability to take payment is fundamental, and Stripe and PayPal are trusted by millions of businesses to handle this process seamlessly.

Each additional payment gateway we support requires maintenance whenever we make changes to the product. Given the recent requirements around Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) and the relatively low volumes associated with these gateways we feel it is the right time for us to streamline our codebase and support overheads.

How will this affect you?

If you are already using Stripe or PayPal to collect payments there will be no change.

If you’re one of the customers who are using Playflow Pro, Braintree, Realex and Pin, we appreciate this announcement is disappointing. We have emailed you to notify you of this change and give you time to prepare, and we are available to help you transition to either Stripe or PayPal and answer any questions you may have.

What’s next?

This last year has been tough for many businesses, and we’ve needed to adapt to survive. But as Paul says in his latest post, we’re still alive! Streamlining our product and processes now will give us the space to continue adding new functionality and improvements in the future.
