Wigs, Women, and Workshops – The Event Round-Up
Wigstock was a New York-based festival for Drag Queens in the 1990s.
This was at the height of RuPaul’s gender-bending music career which made way for the lyrics, “It don’t matter what you wear, they’re checking out your savoir-faire. And, it don’t matter what you do, cause everything looks good on you, Supermodel.”
Through a more apolitical exploration of gender than drag (my undying passion for RuPaul’s Drag Race aside), I’ve spent my whole life trying to figure out what being a woman means.
The best answer I’ve given myself is to take inspiration from different women I aspire to be like, and to constantly keep my eyes open for new, examples.
Two events have started using Tito over the past week whose work spoke to me about different celebrations of feminitiy and womanhood, or at least my definition of it, so I wanted to share them with you:
Step Back, Stand Out
Scala Advance are facilitating a two-day retreat where female leaders can participate in workshops and coaching all about leadership.
To accomodate the differences between these leaders, the women who are planning on attending will participate in a questionnaire so that the organizers can tailor the experience to their needs.
In keeping with the tranquility one would expect from the word “retreat,” the event will be taking place in the grounds of Cliff at Lyons, Celbridge, Co.Kildare. Which is in Ireland, for those of you who aren’t.
Dates: April 25th-26th, 2018
Glossy Summit
Chanel, Calvin Klein, Gucci, and Ralph Lauren have all taken turns in attending previous Glossy events. As this would imply, the team at Glossy focus on beauty and fashion.
The organization is a part of the Digiday family and will focus on trends in the luxury industry, including how high-end brands are dealing with Amazon’s e-commerce monopoly and the effects it has on their sales.
The event will run in multiple tracks including workshops, break-out session and keynotes, all of which aim to educate and empower those in the industry.
Dates: May 21st-23rd, 2018
